Published : Monday, 22 November 2004 The Automatic Grid Creation Algorithm is a powerful routine that arranges subjects into lines in such a way that as many students as possible can be allocated their choices.
Resolution : 1. In the Student Options module select Grid|Develop.
2. The L column represents the number of classes to be placed on the Grid. This was determined by the Lin column in Tallies. Click Create.
3. The program will ask for some flexibility regarding maximum class sizes. Enter 30 and click OK.
The maximum class size is automatically calculated by dividing the number of students nominating the subject, by the number of classes offered and then adding the percentage specified. For example, if 104 students have nominated English and there are 6 classes, enetering zero here will give a maximum class size of 18 (104 divided by 6 + 0%). Entering 30% here will give a maximum class size of 23 (104 divided by 6 + 30%).
4. Click Auto to assign students to courses (classes)
5. After clicking Auto a message will be displayed indicating how many subject choices were assigned and how many were not assigned.
6. The numbers displayed on the generated grid indicate maximum class sizes. RED indicates a class is full.
